The School of Earth Sciences and Engineering at Nanjing University is an interdisciplinary college combining science and engineering. It consists of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, the Department of Geological Engineering and Information Technology, and the Department of Hydro-Science. As one of the oldest geological education institutions in China, it has trained over ten thousand geoscience professionals, including 37 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as 49 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In more than 90 years of history, its educational tradition and characteristics can be summarized in four phrases: patriotic dedication, sincere unity, scientific democracy, and pragmatic innovation. Currently, it enrolls approximately 80 undergraduate students every year covering seven majors (including specializations): Geology, Geology (Bioevolution and Environment International Class), Planetary Science, Geophysics, Hydrology and Water Resources, Groundwater Science and Engineering, and Geological Engineering.

 In recent years, in line with the development of contemporary geosciences, the school of Earth Science and Engineering has established a new concept of cultivating geoscience professionals with “sound personalities as the reserve forces for Earth system science”, as well as the development direction of geoscience of “goes beyond geology, extends beyond the Earth, and advances into the future”. Guided by this, the school has reformed and innovated its talent cultivation model and actively promoted internationalized teaching and exchange programs to broaden the perspectives of undergraduate students. Leveraging its extensive cooperative relationships with dozens of domestic and international universities and research institutions. The school invites renowned scholars from overseas to give lectures and organizes international joint internships, such as the Sino-Russian Baikal Lake Geosciences Joint Internship and the Sino-French University of Orléans Joint Internship. Additionally, the school emphasizes exploiting its research advantages and focuses on cultivating students' innovative thinking abilities and scientific literacy through initiatives such as "rotation in research groups", "undergraduate innovation training programs", and "geological skills competitions". These efforts have yielded significant results in undergraduate talent cultivation. The graduates have high international recognition and a high acceptance rate at top-tier universities. In recent years, over 70% of the graduates have pursued further studies at renowned domestic and international universities, and a group of outstanding graduates has rapidly grown into young leading talents in the field of geosciences.
